Volleyball is a fantastic sport for young athletes. It builds strength, coordination, and teamwork. If you’re just starting out or coaching kids aged 8-15, it’s important to focus on the basics. The right drills can make learning fun and effective. I’m excited to share some beginner volleyball drills that will help young players develop their skills and confidence on the court.
Getting Started with Beginner Volleyball Drills
When kids first pick up a volleyball, everything can feel new and a bit overwhelming. That’s why beginner volleyball drills are essential. They break down the game into simple, manageable parts. These drills focus on fundamental skills like passing, setting, serving, and movement.
Here are some key points to keep in mind:
Keep drills short and engaging to hold attention.
Use positive encouragement to build confidence.

Make sure every player gets plenty of touches on the ball.
One of my favorite drills to start with is the partner passing drill. It’s simple and helps players get comfortable with the ball. Players stand about 6 feet apart and practice bumping the ball back and forth. This drill teaches control and hand positioning.

Fun and Effective Beginner Volleyball Drills
Let’s dive into some beginner volleyball drills that are perfect for youth players. These drills are designed to be fun, build skills, and encourage teamwork.
1. Wall Passing Drill
This drill is great for solo practice or small groups. Players stand about 5 feet from a wall and bump the ball against it. The goal is to keep the ball under control and catch it after it bounces back.
Start with 10 passes in a row.
Focus on using the forearms and keeping elbows locked.
Encourage players to watch the ball carefully.
2. Target Serving Drill
Serving is a key skill in volleyball. This drill helps players practice accuracy.
Set up targets on the opposite side of the net (cones or hoops work well).
Players serve the ball trying to hit the targets.
Award points for hitting or landing near the targets.
3. Moving to the Ball Drill
Volleyball requires quick movement. This drill helps players improve their footwork and reaction time.
Have a coach or partner toss the ball randomly within a small area.
Players move quickly to get under the ball and perform a bump or set.
Repeat for 1-2 minutes, encouraging quick feet and good positioning.
4. Passing Relay
This drill adds a fun competitive element.
Divide players into two teams.
Each team lines up and passes the ball down the line using bump passes.
The last player runs to the front and starts again.
The first team to complete a set number of passes wins.

What is the 5-3-5-3-5 drill in volleyball?
The 5-3-5-3-5 drill is a popular beginner volleyball drill that focuses on improving passing and movement. It’s structured to help players develop control and quick footwork.
Here’s how it works:
Players line up in a formation with 5 players on one side, 3 in the middle, and 5 on the other side.
The ball is passed back and forth between these groups in a specific sequence: 5 passes, then 3, then 5, then 3, then 5 again.
This pattern encourages players to communicate, move quickly, and maintain focus on the ball.
The drill can be done with bump passes or sets, depending on skill level.
This drill is excellent for teaching teamwork and positioning. It also helps players get used to moving around the court while maintaining control of the ball.
Tips for Coaching Youth Volleyball Players
Coaching young players is a rewarding experience. Here are some tips to make your sessions successful:
